Our history

The university college originates with Cathinka Guldberg, who started her nursing course with two students at Grønland in Oslo on the 20th of November 1868, the first of its kind in Norway.

Cathinka Guldberg (1840-1919) trained as a deaconess and nurse in Germany (1866-1868). She was Norway’s first professional nurse, and founded the Deaconess House, where she was the matron from 1868 to 1919.
