Lovisenberg Diaconal University is looking forward to hosting the European Academy of Nursing Science annual summer school and the conference between the 26th of June to the 7th of July 2023. Planning have now been going on since the month of May 2022. All engaged hope that all our European guests, students (about 105) and teachers (about 35-40) will experience St. Hanshaugen, our school, and Oslo from its best side during the two weeks summer event. We are proud to host you and we can’t wait to meet you all!

European Academy of Nursing Science will take place at Lovisenberg Diaconal University College in the district of St. Hanshaugen in Oslo. It is the only private higher educational institution (HEI) focusing on purely educating nurses in Norway.

It is part of the foundation Deaconess Lovisenberg which is a diaconal organization within the Norwegian Church, established in 1868. Deaconess house is the pioneer organization in female nursing and diakonia in Norway, and currently runs extensive operations in education, hospitals, and geriatric care. The foundation has about 2000 full-times positions and about 3000 employees.

The foundation goes all back to the first Norwegian deaconess Cathinka Guldberg (1840-1919) and the founder of the Deaconess House (1868) which she was the manager for 51 years. She is the one that introduced modern nursing in Norway and as a pioneer in the development of the female diaconate. She built a retirement home, a hospital an old age home for the sisters, orphanages, and a church on about 112 acres of land gifted by the merchant Oluf Kiær.

Nursing was chosen as a professional in the implementation of diakonia. For 22 years there was only the Deaconess Institution that professionally trained qualified nurses in Norway. Agreements were quickly established with Rikshospitalet that deaconesses should take responsibility for nursing there and eventually agreements were signed with hospitals across the country. Deaconesses were also sent into private care, as ward sisters and in a multitude of other nursing and care institutions. The professionally qualified nurses were spread across the country.

You will be able to see her stature, given to her by all Norwegian nursing schools and organisations (1966) this gesture can only be seen as Cathinka was highly regarded by all Norwegian Nurses as an important role model. During her time, she had a prominent leadership position in an otherwise strongly male-dominated society. At her 75-year birthday she was the first women in Norway to be awarded the Knight Cross of the 1st class Order of St. Olav.
